Chapter twenty-five

Associate of the Merchant's Guild

Lysander left Cele’s in-construction storefront an hour or two later. He and the half-elf girl had actually hit it off pretty well at that time.

He’d confirmed his earlier suspicions that she was a bit shy as far as conversations went, but that she also had all the earmarks of a workaholic. She never took breaks; she was single-mindedly focused on her goal of setting up her store and forge.

Lysander had a feeling that Cele would be a contributing and industrious business partner, even if she was a bit cagey about the origins of the aetherite.

He had managed to learn that she wasn’t a local. She came from the Ragnon Isles, home of the sea-faring elven principalities. It was hard to get much more out of her than that information; however, the swordsman figured the woman would open up more as time went on, as people ought to do.

With it almost being noon, he was currently heading towards the Merchant’s District for his meeting with Guildmaster Danton.

He veered through the many, loud stalls of the market district. It was the busiest part of the day, or I was quickly coming up upon it anyway. Vendors hawked their wares and tried to fervently attract attention from all passersbys.

It was only when he passed through the curved stone archway that separated the common folk’s markets from the upper-class Merchant’s District that things began to grow quieter.

Pigeons and crows flapped from building to building, and the occasional dog scurried through the street, but for the most part, the Merchant’s District was calmer than its counterpart. Even the stall vendors merely glanced at him rather than calling out for him; their wares were more exclusive than their peers in the lower district and were comparatively higher priced. Many merchants here were well-established and not exactly hungry for a sale; they were rather looking for the right buyers, in contrast to trying to find any buyer. There were also far fewer stalls, with most of the district being made up of storefronts and high-class inns. Along with the occasional manor.

It was in the district square that Lysander found and entered the Merchants Guild; it was a large, multi-story building shingled with turquoise ceramic tiles that crowned fine stonework and ebony-oak framing.

After talking to the standing attendant and passing by a few door guards, Lysander confirmed his appointment and was ushered in to speak to the man he’d come to see.

"Guildmaster Danton," Lysander greeted the man who was standing by the large bookcase in the eastern corner of his expansive office. Fine, padded chairs and a small table sat before the well-crafted shelves of the man’s impressive-looking collection of reading materials.

Danton looked up from the book he was cradling as his red-haired attendant held the heavy office door open for Lysander.

"Lysander, it’s good to see you; I’ve been expecting you," Danton greeted back. "I appreciate you making an appointment since I wasn’t in this morning. I was meeting with the other guild heads, you see.
